100 Movies is a Lot of Movies

This blog post was originally written in October 2022.

Alright, everyone! The hundred movies are over, and it's been a wild ride. Thanks again to all of you who read my reviews- I feel like I learned a lot about horror cinema this year, and although this was a LOT of time and work (seriously, you try setting aside like three hundred hours of next year and see how it goes) I'm still glad I did it. Instead of reviewing a movie today, I'm sort of going to be reviewing some highlights of the Bucket List as a whole.

To look back at this year of horror, I've come up with a few categories I'm going to use to pick some of the movies I've watched. It's not an exhaustive list, of course- if you have any ideas for more categories for me to assess, reply down below and I'll pick the movie/s that fits the best!

Favorite Movie: The Cabin in the Woods (2011). It's just such a fun movie, and I'll never get sick of it.

Least Favorite Movie: Werckmeister Harmonies (2001). It was such a waste of time. No other movie has made me as angry as this one (though a couple came close).

Most Unexpected Like: Dead of Night (1945). It was in the midst of a bunch of unimpressive entries, and the anthology format really came together in a fantastically scary conclusion.

Most Unexpected Dislike: Most of the classic films really shocked me at how little I liked them (compared to how much praise they get from film buffs), so if I had to pick one I'd say The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). It just missed so many marks set up by the previous film.

Most Likely to Watch Again: I feel like it's cheating to say Midsommar (2019), because it's my wife's favorite movie and she'll definitely make me watch it again. But aside from that, I really want to watch Upgrade (2018) again!

Best Example of Horror: Hereditary (2018) is probably the scariest movie on this list!

Worst Example of Horror: Gotta be Room 237 (2013), right? It's a documentary about people's fan theories. If not that, maybe Eraserhead (1977), which wasn't horror and wasn't even interesting once the metaphor fell away.

Most Brutal Movie: The Loved Ones (2012) made me the most squeamish. A lot of these movies had intense torture scenes but none of them were as visceral as that.

Least Brutal Movie: Maybe Dracula (1931)? The only killing happens off-screen, if I recall.

So that's that. And since I've made a lot of comments about how this list feels like it was put together by an AI or a group of people that didn't communicate, I decided a fun exercise would be to put together my own 100-movie Bucket List! I don't expect anybody to watch all of them (though please let me know if you do!) but it was fun nonetheless, and I recommend each of you try to put together a list of 100 movies you think everyone should see!

This list is not in any particular order, and I tried to only choose one movie from any given franchise (though I broke that rule a couple times). I also tried not to include any So-Bad-It's-Good movies (again, a couple snuck through) because I feel like that could be its own list.
