2026: The Franchise Strikes Back

Hello again, everyone! Hopefully you've had an uneventful year so far. It's almost that time, and you know what that means- 31 more horror reviews! A few years back (2020, it feels like a million years ago) I chose four movie franchises- Halloween, Hellraiser, Jeepers Creepers, and A Nightmare on Elm Street- and reviewed (practically) all of the movies in those franchises. This year I'm doing something similar- I've chosen three franchises I'm going to watch in full (except for a couple entries I've already reviewed), and then I'm going to round the month out by watching a few entries from the previous set of franchises that I didn't get to last time (mostly because they hadn't released yet). Here is the list of movies I'll be reviewing this month: 1. Saw (2004) 2. Saw II (2005) 3. Saw III (2006) 4. Saw IV (2007) 5. Saw V (2008) 6. Saw VI (2009) 7. Saw 3D (2010) 8. Jigsaw (2017) 9. Spiral (2021) 10. Saw X (2023) 11. Paranormal Activity (2007) 12....

'Tis the Season to Watch Horror!

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmastime everyone! Just when I thought I was sick of holiday-themed horror films, I decided to shove twelve more down my throat! There was a positive-enough response to last year's Twelve Slays of Christmas that I felt it only appropriate to go ahead and to Twelve More Slays of Christmas. So here we are! Just a note: I may decide otherwise in eleven months but I'm pretty sure this is the last time I'll be doing twelve Christmas-themed horror films in December. There's still a huge list of them on Wikipedia , so like, it's definitely possible  to keep doing it, but the problem is that I basically already watched all of the ones I knew or cared about last year. (Most of the ones last year were hand-picked by me, specifically because I had already seen them and wanted to share them with others.) This time around, though, I was sifting exclusively through movies I'd never even heard of, so with one or two exceptions I knew nothing about any of t...

2025: The Year of Holidays

Welcome back, everyone! Another year, another 31 movies in October! I want to start off by thanking anyone who has followed along with this blog for the last year or two. Although this blog is mainly here for October, I had fully intended on writing at least a handful of reviews during the year; this particular year, however, has been quite an ordeal. I won't depress anyone but the details but it's been a long, rough, stressful, and sad year, so it's been hard to find the time to do much of anything. (I was very close to writing an entry a month or so ago- a double feature review comparing 2022's Fall and 2015's Landmine Goes Click - but some stuff went down in my personal life around then and I just couldn't. Maybe someday I'll get to those, we'll see.) As much as I would love to save myself the 80-90 hours it's going to take to do all of this, I'm determined to keep the tradition going with 31 more horror movies. I had juggled a few ideas for ...

The End of a Year

Well, 2024 has come to an end. I started this blog about a year ago as a favor to my wife, and I'm really glad I did! It's been a lot of fun to go back and re-read all of these reviews I wrote in previous years, and although I haven't gotten a ton of traffic it's been nice to be able to show them to people and hear some feedback. Moving forward, unfortunately I won't be able to keep putting out this many reviews every year. (Remember, most of my uploads were written over the past seven or eight years, ain't nobody got time for that.) So at the moment, the next definite updates you can expect are 31 more movies in October 2025. I will probably pop in once in a while with a review of a movie or two I watched in the meantime, but I can't promise anything specific in advance. If you have any suggestions for movies to watch in the future, please let me know! Either reply to this post or email me at Gekleinert@gmail.com. It would definitely be easy to fill in some...

The Twelve Slays of Christmas

Happy December, everyone! After taking a nice month-long break from reviews, I'm eager to knock out a few more before the year is up. I had a couple people recommend that I try reviewing other types of movies (comedies, action movies); in particular, a friend suggested I review 31 Christmas movies in December. I don't plan on doing that, for a few different reasons (not the least of which being how difficult it is to do 31 movies in a month), but I decided to put a twist on it: I'm going to be reviewing twelve Christmas-themed horror movies, for the Twelve Slays of Christmas! (When I first decided to do this I thought, "Are there even twelve Christmas-themed horror movies?" And the answer is of course, yes. There's way more than that. I found a list of 47 and several of them I wanted to watch weren't even on there.) I might make changes to the order, but below is the list of movies I plan to review, starting on Saturday, December 14th and going until Chris...

What Is To Come

Hello, everyone! It's been a few weeks since the end of October and I've been taking some much-needed rest. (Seriously, watching and reviewing a movie every day is exhausting, and takes a huge amount of time. I love to so it, but still.) I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who has checked out my blog thus far, but I also want to announce what's to come! I'm going to be taking a break for the next few weeks, but starting December 14th, I'm going to be reviewing 12 Christmas-themed horror movies! So the 12 Days of Christmas Horror is still to come. (I do not have a finalized list just yet but I will update when I do.) So be sure to check back in over the next few weeks so you can follow along! Thanks again, and have a great November!

2024: Back to Where It All Began

It's that time again! First and foremost, I want to mention that this is going to be the first October since I started this blog, so let me thank everyone who's come here and followed some or all of my reviews this year. (There's a few of you out there, and that's awesome!) I started this blog specifically so my wife would have somewhere to read my reviews without having to search through my Facebook, but it's definitely gotten some traffic since I started it so thank you for coming. Now, story time! I never really watched many horror films when I was young, though I did see bits and pieces of a few whenever my older siblings rented one and I was able to peek into the living room. I was always intrigued by the idea of horror, and perusing the horror aisle at our local Blockbuster Video always gave me the chills from the creepy box art. When my wife and I first started dating back in 2005, one day we decided to go to the rental place and pick out a horror movie- but ...

2023: Life After the Bucket List

After 2022's intense 100-movie challenge, for this year I decided to go back to my roots: finding a list of 31 horror films some random person made online, and watching those. But this time I made sure to swap out any movies I've already reviewed, and I think we've got an exciting batch! So, in October 2023, I watched the following movies: 1. Trick 'r Treat (2007) 2. Inside (2007) 3. Dead Snow (2009) 4. Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (2014) 5. Noroi: the Curse (2005) 6. REC (2007) 7. Terrifier (2016) 8. Terrifier 2 (2022) 9. Possession (1981) 10. The Fog (1980) 11. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) 12. Event Horizon (1997) 13. Strangeland (1998) 14. Session 9 (2001) 15. Inferno (1980) 16. The Thing (1982) 17. Goosebumps (2015) 18. Ghost Ship (2002) 19. House of 1000 Corpses (2003) 20. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) 21. Dog Soldiers (2002) 22. Thir13en Ghosts (2001) 23. As Above, So Below (2014) 24. The Wailing (2016) 25. Society (1989) 26. Spookies (19...

100 Movies is a Lot of Movies

This blog post was originally written in October 2022. Alright, everyone! The hundred movies are over, and it's been a wild ride. Thanks again to all of you who read my reviews- I feel like I learned a lot about horror cinema this year, and although this was a LOT of time and work (seriously, you try setting aside like three hundred hours of next year and see how it goes) I'm still glad I did it. Instead of reviewing a movie today, I'm sort of going to be reviewing some highlights of the Bucket List as a whole.  To look back at this year of horror, I've come up with a few categories I'm going to use to pick some of the movies I've watched. It's not an exhaustive list, of course- if you have any ideas for more categories for me to assess, reply down below and I'll pick the movie/s that fits the best! Favorite Movie: The Cabin in the Woods (2011). It's just such a fun movie, and I'll never get sick of it. Least Favorite Movie: Werckmeister Harmonie...

Gabe's 100-Movie Bucket List Challenge

Image
Hello once again, everyone! The next batch of movies is going to break from format a bit. So far, all of my movie reviews had been written in October of their respective year, as part of a 31-Movies-In-October ritual that started way back in 2016. In November 2021, however, for my birthday, a good friend gave me a poster of 100 Top Horror Movies  where each movie is a little scratch-off box revealing some artwork for that movie. Seeing this as a fun challenge, I decided that over the coming year, I would watch and review every movie on the list, ending with the final 31 movies across the 31 days of October 2022! This was a huge undertaking, of course (I've already talked in past blog posts about the sheer amount of time 31 movies take to watch and review, and although this isn't confined to one month, it's still 100 freaking movies) but my weekly podcast was about to end and I decided I should put that incoming free time to good use. It's worth noting that I'd alrea...

2021: Zombies Ate My Free Time

Once more, I subjected myself to 31 horror films in 31 days! As usual, I considered not doing it in 2021 but as usual, I had several friends tell me they love reading my reviews so I went ahead. I didn't come up with a theme until literally halfway through October 1st, and it took some time to finalize a list (several of the films I originally wanted to cover weren't easily watchable so I had to swap them out) but in the end I decided that 2021 would be the year where I watch 31 zombie movies. (As it turned out, I'd only ever seen a small handful, and certainly none of the classics!) There was a brief period where I was traveling and so I couldn't watch the movies I had planned (hence why two of the movies are decidedly NOT zombie films) but overall I covered a huge portion of the spectrum of what a zombie film could be. (Also, I honestly don't think I realized that I had already reviewed Pontypool; as a result, this is a completely new review. Fair warning, there w...

2020: Year of the Franchise

In the years so far, the plan was usually to watch movies based around the fact that they were available on streaming platforms. (The first year it was literally just a list someone posted online of streamable horror films, with alternates if you didn't own a subscription to a particular platform.) In 2020, I decided to move away from the "random assortment of stuff people recommended" motif and instead start planning my viewing around a particular theme. (Will I keep this as a requirement in years to come? Stick around and find out!) For this year I decided that I really wanted to get caught up on the various horror franchises that I'd spent my whole life hearing about. I never really watched much horror as a kid, and apart from a few choice selections I'd never really seen many other franchise horror films. So I picked out a few (particularly, Halloween, Hellraiser, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, with Jeepers Creepers thrown in for good measure) and watched (bas...

The Great Horror Hiatus of 2018

So, remembering back to when I started doing these reviews, I feel like every year after the first I threatened to stop doing it. (It's a LOT of work, not just setting aside 1.5 hours out of the 24 we all get to sit down and watch a movie EVERY DAY, but also writing a review for each one, which can itself take an additional hour or more.) But I felt like every time I expressed an interest in not doing it that year, everyone within earshot would tell me that they really enjoyed reading my reviews so I should keep going. So I'm incredibly surprised to see that I don't seem to have a single review written for 2018, which I can only take to mean I just didn't do it that year. But the important thing is that I picked it back up in 2019, and boy did I come back full-force! While I hadn't yet started choosing movies along a particular theme (I'm pretty sure these were just movies that had been recommended to me) my reviews appear to be WAY more fleshed-out from this pe...

The Beginning of a Tradition: 2017

After several people told me they enjoyed my reviews the first year and expressed disappointment at the idea of me not doing it in 2017, I decided to go ahead and subject myself to another month of movie reviews. Looking back at my posts, it seems I played it a bit fast and loose with my picks this time around- some of the movies I reviewed were still in theaters, and many of the others were ones I'd had on my Netflix watch list and I was just trying to clear them out. Also, either Facebook has lost some of my reviews, or I skipped numerous days this month, because there a bunch of days unaccounted for- altogether I was only able to find 22 reviews from October 2017 (and one of them was only a single sentence but I'm counting it anyway). Also, I was as shocked as anybody else to notice this, but apparently I didn't write any reviews for 2018? I've always talked about possibly skipping a year (it's a lot of work, after all) but I didn't realize I'd actually d...

2016: A Month of Horror in Retrospect

This blog post was originally written in October 2016. Day 31: A Month of Horror in Retrospect Since I had seen all of the alternates on the list, today I decided to not watch a movie and simply enjoy the holiday. I wanted to say thank you all for following my progress through the month, and I hope you were inspired to watch more horror yourselves! Here's some breakdowns from the last month: Best movie: The Voices. It was just such an out-of-nowhere film that really got my interest and struck me to my core on a deep psychological level. Worst movie: I think it's a toss-up between A Girl Walks Home At Midnight and Under the Skin. A Girl... was just so dull, but at the same time I have no clue what Under the Skin was about and I'm not entirely convinced the director did either. I guess I'd be willing to watch Under the Skin again if it meant I'd actually be able to make sense of it, but I wouldn't watch A Girl... again. Best Foreign Film: Troll Hunter. It was a su...

My First Reviews: 2016

These were the first horror reviews I started writing on Facebook, and looking back, I definitely had a lot of room to grow. These first reviews are all pretty short and bereft of detail (I hadn't quite worked out my format yet), but I still think there's some merit in seeing where I started compared to where I'll eventually go. The initial inspiration for this group of movies (and the whole review project in general) was that all of the movies I would watch were readily available on streaming platforms I was subscribed to, but in future years I tried to pick some sort of a theme (and easy streaming was not always a factor). In 2016 I covered the following movies: 1. Jaws (1975) 2. The VVitch (2015) 3. Pontypool (2008) 4. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) 5. Tremors (1990) 6. The Invitation (2015) 7. Bone Tomahawk (2015) 8. We Are Still Here (2015) 9. The Mist (2007) 10. Housebound (2014) 11. Spring (2014) 12. The Host (2006) 13. The Babadook (2014) 14. Under the Skin (2013) 15. T...

Welcome to Gabe Reviews Horror!

Hello, everyone! My name is Gabe, and I'm a writer, gamer, builder, and horror enthusiast. Since 2016, every October, I've been watching 31 horror films and writing reviews for them. At first I just posted my reviews on my personal Facebook, and I got a positive enough response that I started branching out and posting them on a few other venues- but there was never a centralized location where someone could find all of them. So, as a gift to my wife (who always wanted to share them with her friends but never had a good way to do so), I've decided this year to start compiling all of my reviews on a blog, and that's where you are! So, the purpose of this blog is twofold: it's a place for me to re-post the reviews I've already written (nearly three hundred of them), and a place for me to write new reviews in the future. Primarily my new reviews will be posted every October, but now that I have a dedicated space for them, I may end up writing more in the off-season...
